Abstract

This research aims to develop interior designers’ color application ability through systematic teaching which is sustainable color application in interior design related to the goal of SDG 11 and 12 for sustainable and well-being. The Nippon color design (NCD) color system is the concept used in systematic teaching methods to help interior designers enhance their color application abilities. Based on the rapid development of China's interior design industry, the strong industry demand, the lack of color application ability has become a bottleneck in the career development of designers.  Through questionnaires, interviews, and case analysis, data from 20 interior designers in Southwest China were collected before and after the teaching intervention to identify a systematic teaching approach. The findings indicate that systematic teaching, adhering to a "Theory - Tools - Practice" three-phase model via the structured course design: Theory → Emotional Expression → Case Practice, significantly enhances interior designers' effectively improves interior designers' color application ability through test, ask for opinions and satisfaction and interview analyses. This instructional model markedly enhances designers' color matching precision, client happiness, and their proficiency in managing intricate color scenarios. The structured instructional program is quite wonderful. Interior designers exhibit advancement in theoretical, practical, and cognitive domains. The precision of theoretical comprehension has risen from 10% to 90%. Nonetheless, opportunities for enhancement in pedagogy remain, including the expansion of structured course content, the augmentation of instructional flexibility, and the refinement of assessment and evaluation methodologies. It is advisable for higher education institutions and design training organizations to use the NCD color system and establish a standard for assessing color proficiency to advance color education in China.
