Abstract

The global food industry is experiencing a paradigm shift toward clean-label products as consumers increasingly demand foods that are perceived as natural, minimally processed, and free from artificial additives. This transition has intensified scientific discussions regarding the safety, technological necessity, and regulatory governance of food additives while simultaneously amplifying public concerns shaped by media narratives, health awareness, and market-driven claims. Although many approved food additives have undergone rigorous toxicological assessments and are considered safe within established acceptable daily intake limits, discrepancies between scientific evidence and consumer perception continue to influence purchasing behavior and product reformulation strategies. The absence of a universally accepted definition of the clean-label concept further complicates regulatory harmonization and industrial implementation across different jurisdictions. This paper critically examines the scientific evidence supporting the safety and functionality of food additives, evaluates consumer attitudes toward clean-label products, and analyzes emerging regulatory challenges faced by policymakers and the food industry. It also explores innovations in natural ingredient substitution and sustainable food processing that can reconcile consumer expectations with food safety, nutritional quality, and technological performance, thereby providing a comprehensive perspective on the future of clean-label food systems.
